Finely Bound Edition of John Buchan's The Three Hostages
Finely bound edition of this psychological espionage thriller, the fourth novel following Richard Hannay. Octavo, bound in three quarters calf over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, marbled endpapers. In fine condition.
John Buchan (1875–1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and public servant whose career combined literary achievement with imperial administration. During the First World War he served in British intelligence and later held political office, culminating in his appointment as Governor General of Canada (1935–1940). The Three Hostages (1924) is the fourth Richard Hannay novel by Buchan and departs from the earlier wartime adventures to focus on psychological suspense in a post–First World War setting. The story follows Hannay as he leaves his settled country life to rescue three kidnapped children whose abduction is orchestrated by Dominick Medina, a charismatic and politically connected figure who employs hypnosis and mental manipulation as instruments of control. Rather than relying solely on physical pursuit, Hannay must engage in psychological strategy, infiltrating Medina’s circle while feigning susceptibility to his influence.
