John Buchan (1875–1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and public servant whose career combined literary achievement with imperial administration. During the First World War he served in British intelligence and later held political office, culminating in his appointment as Governor General of Canada (1935–1940). The Island of Sheep (1936) is the final Richard Hannay novel by Buchan, depicting an older, retired Hannay drawn back into danger by a longstanding oath of loyalty. Now a country landowner in his fifties, Hannay agrees to protect Valdemar Haraldsen, the son of a former comrade, who is pursued by blackmailers seeking a hidden treasure tied to an old vendetta. The narrative moves from rural England to the Scottish Borders and ultimately to the remote Norlands, where the titular “Island of Sheep” serves as both a physical refuge and a symbolic sanctuary.
