"You must pay a price for fame, you know": First Edition of John Buchan's Castle Gay
First edition of this gripping adventure novel, the second to include Dickson McCunn. Octavo, bound in half morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine in five compartments within gilt bands. In near fine condition.
John Buchan (1875–1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and public servant whose career combined literary achievement with imperial administration. During the First World War he served in British intelligence and later held political office, culminating in his appointment as Governor General of Canada (1935–1940). Castle Gay (1930) centers on the mistaken kidnapping of Thomas Carlyle Craw, a powerful and reclusive newspaper proprietor, who is abducted during what begins as a student escapade and subsequently becomes entangled in a wider conspiracy involving foreign politics and monarchical unrest in Eastern Europe. Retired grocer Dickson McCunn returns alongside his younger associates, Jaikie Galt and Dougal Crombie, as they work to unravel the plot and secure Craw’s release.
