John Buchan (1875–1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and public servant whose career combined literary achievement with imperial administration. Educated at the University of Glasgow and Oxford, Buchan gained international recognition for his adventure fiction, most notably The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915), while also producing works of history and biography. The Courts of the Morning (1929) is an adventure thriller associated with the Richard Hannay sequence, though its central figure is Sandy Arbuthnot. The novel concerns a conspiracy led by the industrial magnate Castor, who seeks to establish a base of global power in the fictional South American republic of Olifa by exploiting political instability and a subjugated labor force. When the scheme is uncovered, Sandy—assisted by allies including John Blenkiron and Archie Roylance—undertakes a revolutionary intervention to prevent the consolidation of a new dictatorship.
