John Buchan (1875–1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and statesman whose diverse career bridged literature, politics, and imperial service. John Macnab (1925) is a novel that blends adventure, satire, and social commentary within the framework of the interwar period. The story follows three disillusioned professional men—Sir Edward Leithen, John Palliser-Yeates, and Lord Lamancha—who, bored with their comfortable but unfulfilling lives, assume the collective alias “John Macnab” and challenge local landowners to catch them poaching game on their estates. Alongside his literary output, Buchan pursued a distinguished political path, serving as a Member of Parliament, director of wartime propaganda, and ultimately as Governor General of Canada (1935–1940).
