"It's idiocy, but all war is idiotic, and the most whole-hearted idiot is apt to win": First Edition of John Buchan's Greenmantle; Finely Bound by Bayntun-Riviere
First edition of this classic WWI spy thriller novel, the second to follow Richard Hannay. Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco by Bayntun-Riviere with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. In near fine condition.
John Buchan (1875–1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and public servant whose career combined literary achievement with imperial administration. During the First World War he served in British intelligence and later held political office, culminating in his appointment as Governor General of Canada (1935–1940). Greenmantle (1916) follows Richard Hannay as he is dispatched on a covert mission to thwart a German plan to incite a large-scale Islamic uprising against the British Empire by manipulating a prophetic figure known as “Greenmantle.” Traveling in disguise across enemy-controlled Europe to Constantinople, Hannay is joined by his allies Sandy Arbuthnot, Peter Pienaar, and the American John S. Blenkiron, as they confront the German officer Stumm and the enigmatic Hilda von Einem.
