First edition of this environmental classic and foundational text in American conservation literature about the Everglades. Octavo, original publisher’s cloth with gilt titles to the spine, pictorial endpapers, with black and white illustrations. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, “To Adelaide…Brooks, 1915, With so many happy memories of college and with all good wishes, Marjory Stoneman Douglas – Wellesley, 1912.” Douglas graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts in 1912. She majored in English literature, was elected class orator, and graduated at age 22 before starting her career as a journalist and notable environmental activist. Wellesley College later honored her with the Alumnae Achievement Award in 1977. Very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with some wear and separation to the front joint. Illustrated by Robert Fink. Article tipped in to the rear free endpaper of Douglas speaking at Sorosis. First editions are rare and desirable signed.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a journalist, author, women’s suffrage advocate, and conservationist known for her staunch defense of the Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development. She lived to 108, working until nearly the end of her life for Everglades restoration. Upon her death, The Independent stated, “In the history of the American environmental movement, there have been few more remarkable figures than Marjory Stoneman Douglas.”
