First Edition of Voice of the River; Inscribed by Marjory Stoneman Douglas
First edition, early printing of this autobiography of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, detailing her life as a pioneering environmentalist, journalist, and feminist who championed the protection of the Florida Everglades. Octavo, original publisher's half-cloth, illustrated with black and white photographs. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the verso of the half-title page, "For Will Durham with regards, Marjory Stoneman Douglas." Fine in a very good dust jacket. Written with John Rothchild. Jacket illustration and design by Frank Cochrane. Two newspaper articles about Douglas living to 104 years old and receiving the Medal of Freedom laid in.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a journalist, author, women’s suffrage advocate, and conservationist known for her staunch defense of the Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development. A longtime writer for the Miami Herald, Douglas combined literary skill with investigative reporting to address social issues and environmental concerns in the rapidly developing state. She achieved national recognition with her influential book The Everglades: River of Grass (1947), which reframed the Everglades as a complex and vital ecosystem rather than a worthless swamp and helped inspire modern conservation efforts. She lived to 108, working until nearly the end of her life for Everglades restoration. Upon her death, The Independent stated, “In the history of the American environmental movement, there have been few more remarkable figures than Marjory Stoneman Douglas.”
