First edition of this historical and cultural study of Florida that traces the region’s development from early exploration through the modern era. Octavo, original publisher's cloth, cartographic endpapers. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "To John B. Chowning, for his alert interest in his wonderful nature state, With best wishes. Marjory Stoneman Douglas." Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Uncommon in this condition and signed.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890–1998) was an American journalist, author, and environmental advocate best known for her influential work on the ecology and preservation of the Florida Everglades. A longtime writer for the Miami Herald, Douglas combined literary skill with investigative reporting to draw attention to the environmental and political challenges facing Florida’s unique landscape. Her landmark book The Everglades: River of Grass (1947) reframed public understanding of the region by presenting the Everglades as a vital and complex ecosystem rather than a useless swamp, helping to inspire conservation efforts and environmental policy reforms.
