    First edition of this environmental classic and foundational text in American conservation literature about the Everglades. Octavo, original publisher's cloth with gilt titles to the spine, pictorial endpapers, with black and white illustrations. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "To Adelaide...Brooks, 1915, With so many happy memories of college and with all good wishes, Marjory Stoneman Douglas - Wellesley, 1912." Douglas graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts in 1912. She majored in English literature, was elected class orator, and graduated at age 22 before starting her career as a journalist and notable environmental activist. Wellesley College later honored her with the Alumnae Achievement Award in 1977. Very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with some wear and separation to the front joint. Illustrated by Robert Fink. Article tipped in to the rear free endpaper of Douglas speaking at Sorosis. First editions are rare and desirable signed.
