Being and Nothingness, first published in France as L’Être et le néant in 1943 and here in its first English translation of 1956, is the central work of twentieth-century existentialism and one of the most influential philosophical books of the modern age. In it Jean-Paul Sartre sets out his account of consciousness, freedom, and responsibility, distinguishing the inert being-in-itself of objects from the being-for-itself of human consciousness and developing his famous analyses of bad faith and of the look of the other. Sartre (1905-1980) was the leading figure of French existentialism and one of the most celebrated intellectuals of his century; in 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he declined, becoming the first person ever voluntarily to refuse that honor.
