Réflexions sur la question juive (1946), translated into English as Anti-Semite and Jew, is Jean-Paul Sartre's influential examination of the roots and psychology of anti-Semitism. Divided into four parts, it dissects the figure of the anti-Semite as a man who has chosen bad faith and fear over reason, weighs the positions of the democrat and of the inauthentic and authentic Jew, and argues that anti-Semitism is not merely an opinion but a passion that implicates the whole of French society. Written immediately after the Liberation, when the deportations carried out under Vichy were still fresh in memory, the essay applied Sartre's existentialist framework to one of the central moral questions of the age and became one of the most widely read and debated of his shorter works.
