First Limited Edition of Jean-Paul Sartre's La Putain respectueuse
First edition of this taut one-act drama of racism in the American South in which a prostitute is pressured to give false testimony that would condemn an innocent Black man in order to shield a white killer. One of 500 numbered copies, this is number 403. Octavo, original printed wrappers. In near fine condition with the top edges uncut.
La Putain respectueuse (1946), translated into English as The Respectful Prostitute, is a one-act play Sartre based on an American lynching case. Set in a town in the American South, it follows Lizzie, a Northern prostitute pressured by a powerful senator's family to sign a false statement accusing a Black man of assault so as to cover the crime of a white man who has killed. Written in the aftermath of the Second World War as Sartre was turning his existentialist thought toward political engagement, the play is a sharp indictment of racism and of the moral cowardice that lets injustice stand, and it became one of his most frequently staged dramatic works.
