First Edition of Jean-Paul Sartre's Morts sans Sépulture
First edition of this harrowing three-act drama of French Resistance fighters held in an attic and awaiting torture at the hands of the collaborationist Milice, each forced to confront fear, dignity, and the meaning of a sacrifice that may already be in vain. Octavo, written in French, original printed wrappers. In near fine condition.
Morts sans sépulture (1946), staged in English as The Victors and as Men Without Shadows, is one of Sartre's most unflinching plays, written in the immediate aftermath of the Occupation. It confines a handful of captured Resistance fighters in an attic where they await torture by the French Milice, and asks what their suffering and death can mean when the cause may already be lost and their own leader sits unrecognized among them. Composed as Sartre was giving his existentialist philosophy an increasingly political and committed form, the play stages in extreme circumstances his central preoccupations with freedom, choice, and the way a person defines himself through his acts.
