W. Somerset Maugham’s The Vagrant Mood is a compact collection of six thoughtful literary essays that highlight his sharp critical eye, dry wit, and gift for vivid character portraiture. Moving easily across a wide range of subjects—from reflections on major thinkers to discussions of writers, artists, and changing literary tastes—Maugham considers topics such as the painter Zurbarán, the fading appeal of detective fiction, and a warm tribute to his mentor Augustus Hare.
