East of Suez is a play in seven scenes by W. Somerset Maugham, a sweeping melodrama of interracial love and jealousy set among the Europeans and Chinese of Peking. First produced at His Majesty's Theatre in London in 1922 with elaborate Chinese spectacle and incidental music by Eugene Goossens, it was one of the most ambitious stage productions of its day. One of the most popular and highest paid authors of his era, Maugham drew repeatedly on his travels in the Far East for his fiction and drama, and he is best remembered for the novels Of Human Bondage, The Moon and Sixpence, and The Razor's Edge.
