John Muir's First Book, The Mountains of California
Early printing of John Muir’s first book, his classic celebration of the Sierra Nevada. Octavo, original pictorial cloth decorated in gilt and green with a wreath of pine cones, top edge gilt, illustrated with photogravures and engravings. First published in 1894, this is the 1901 printing. Photogravure of Muir tipped in on the front pastedown which has left toning on the opposite front free endpaper. In near fine condition. A very sharp example of this cornerstone of American nature writing.
The Mountains of California, first published in 1894, was John Muir’s first book, a rapturous account of the Sierra Nevada gathered largely from the essays he had written for Century Magazine. Ranging from the glaciers and forests to the water ouzel and the Douglas squirrel, and including his famous chapter describing a wind-storm ridden out in the swaying top of a Douglas fir, it established Muir as the great literary voice of the American wilderness and helped rally support for the preservation of the western mountains. John Muir (1838-1914), the Scottish-born naturalist known as the Father of the National Parks, had founded the Sierra Club two years before its publication and would become the most influential conservationist in American history.
