Exceedingly Uncommon Photograph Signed by John Muir
Rare original sepia tone photograph of the great naturalist John Muir, the father of the national parks and founder of the Sierra Club. Bust portrait by J. Edward B. Greene showing Muir in three-quarter view. Signed by Muir in the blank lower margin, “John Muir.” A period press photograph, bearing the ink received stamps of the Newspaper Enterprise Association on the verso and red pencil cropping marks above and below the head. In near fine condition, with a short closed tear at the lower edge touching the “M” of the signature but without loss. The photograph measures 10.75 inches by 7.75 inches. Triple matted and framed. The entire piece measures 16.25 inches by 13 inches. A exceedingly uncommon signed image of one of the most important conservationists in American history.
John Muir was the most influential naturalist and wilderness advocate in American history, a Scottish-born wanderer whose rapturous writing and tireless campaigning helped establish Yosemite, Sequoia, and other national parks and gave rise to the modern conservation movement. In 1892 he founded the Sierra Club, which he led until his death, and his friendship with President Theodore Roosevelt, with whom he famously camped in Yosemite in 1903, helped shape federal conservation policy. Through books such as My First Summer in the Sierra and The Mountains of California, Muir taught generations of Americans to see the wilderness as sacred, and he is remembered today as the father of the national parks.
