Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986) was a French philosopher, writer, and feminist theorist whose work played a central role in twentieth-century existentialism and modern gender studies. Closely associated with Jean-Paul Sartre, she developed a distinctive philosophical voice that combined existential ethics with social analysis, most notably in 'The Second Sex' (1949), which examined the historical and cultural construction of womanhood. 'L’Amérique au jour le jour' recounts Simone de Beauvoir’s observations during her 1947 journey across the United States, where she traveled for lectures and personal visits. Through a series of episodic reflections, she describes American cities, landscapes, and social customs while critically examining issues such as racial segregation, gender roles, political attitudes, and mass consumer culture.
