Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986) was a French philosopher, writer, and feminist theorist whose work played a central role in twentieth-century existentialism and modern gender studies. Closely associated with Jean-Paul Sartre, she developed a distinctive philosophical voice that combined existential ethics with social analysis, most notably in 'The Second Sex' (1949), which examined the historical and cultural construction of womanhood.
