The Story of the Malakand Field Force, first published in 1898, was Winston Churchill’s first book, written when he was only twenty-three, recounting his service with Sir Bindon Blood’s expedition against the rebellious tribes of the Malakand and Swat valleys on the North-West Frontier of India. Serving as both a young cavalry officer and a war correspondent, Churchill witnessed hard fighting at first hand, and his account, praised for its dash and descriptive power, launched the literary career that would run alongside his political one for the rest of his long life. The book was frequently reprinted, appearing in the popular Silver Library series, of which this is an example.
