First edition of the catalogue of the celebrated American exhibition of Sir Winston Churchill’s paintings, reproducing his canvases, many of them in colour. Large octavo, 48 pages, original cream cloth, illustrated throughout with photographic reproductions of Churchill’s paintings. Presentation copy, inscribed by Winston Churchill on the title page, “Inscribed for H. Hulland by Winston S. Churchill.” In very good condition, the cloth slightly marked. A rare and desirable inscribed copy, uniting the great statesman with the private passion that gave him his deepest solace.
Painting was Winston Churchill’s great private passion. He took it up in 1915, in the depths of despair after the Dardanelles disaster, and over the next half century produced some five hundred canvases, mostly landscapes, at first painting under the pseudonym Charles Morin and later exhibiting at the Royal Academy. In 1958 a selection of his pictures toured the United States in an exhibition sponsored by Hallmark Cards and its chairman Joyce C. Hall, and this catalogue, published for that tour, reproduces the works in colour and in black and white. Churchill set down his philosophy of the art in his charming essay Painting as a Pastime, confessing that he meant to spend a good part of his first million years in heaven at his easel.
