London to Ladysmith via Pretoria (1900) is Winston Churchill’s gripping account of his experiences as a war correspondent in the Second Boer War. Captured by the Boers in an ambush on an armoured train in November 1899, he was held prisoner in Pretoria and made a audacious solo escape, traveling some three hundred miles to safety with a price on his head, an exploit that turned him into an international celebrity. Published while he was still in his twenties, the book helped launch both his literary reputation and the political career that would make him one of the towering figures of the twentieth century.
