Typed Letter Signed by President Theodore Roosevelt, Promising to See the Silver Collection of Judge Clearwater at the Metropolitan Museum
Typed letter signed by Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth President of the United States, written on the stationery of Metropolitan magazine from his office as its contributing editor. One page, headed "The Livest Magazine in America, 432 Fourth Avenue, New York" and "Office of Theodore Roosevelt," dated November 28, 1916, and boldly signed "Theodore Roosevelt." The letter reads in full, "My dear Mr. Clearwater: That's a mighty nice letter of yours and I thank you for it. The next time I go to the Metropolitan Museum I shall make a point of seeing your collection. With hearty thanks, Faithfully yours, Theodore Roosevelt." Addressed to Mr. A. T. Clearwater of the Ulster County Savings Bank Building, Kingston, New York. The recipient, Judge Alphonso Trumpbour Clearwater, was a jurist and one of the foremost collectors of early American silver of his day. His superb collection, rich in the work of colonial and early New York silversmiths, was given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the Clearwater Collection remains a cornerstone of the museum's American silver holdings. The collection notably included pieces by Nicholas Roosevelt, an eighteenth-century New York silversmith and an ancestor of the President himself, which lends a personal warmth to Roosevelt's promise here to seek out Clearwater's collection on his next visit to the museum. In very good condition with the usual folds, light handling creases, and chips to the extremities. The letter measures 11 inches by 8.5 inches.
Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the twenty-sixth President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. The youngest man ever to become president, he took office at the age of forty-two after the assassination of William McKinley, and he became the driving force of the Progressive Era, trust-busting the great corporations, championing the conservation of natural lands, mediating an end to the Russo-Japanese War, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906, and overseeing the construction of the Panama Canal. After leaving the White House he mounted a third-party campaign for the presidency in 1912 as the candidate of the Progressive Bull Moose Party, survived an assassin's bullet on the campaign trail, and in his last years wrote prolifically. This letter dates from that later period, when Roosevelt served as a contributing editor of Metropolitan magazine, using its offices as his own.
