Theodore Roosevelt Photograph Signed and Dated Aboard Ship, Returning from His African Expedition
A remarkable photograph of Theodore Roosevelt, signed and dated by him aboard ship on the day before his triumphant return to America from Africa in 1910. The group portrait shows Roosevelt on the bridge of the SS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria with the ship’s captain and crew during the voyage home from the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition, and is boldly signed by him in the image along the lower edge and dated June 17th 1910, the day before the ship reached New York. Between 1909 and 1910 Roosevelt led a celebrated expedition, funded by Andrew Carnegie and the Smithsonian Institution, to collect specimens in Africa for the new National Museum of Natural History, gathering more than 11,000 animals, an expedition he recorded in his best-selling book African Game Trails, before touring Europe, where he received in person the Nobel Peace Prize he had been awarded in 1906. He sailed home aboard the Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, whose darkroom was used by his nineteen-year-old son Kermit, who accompanied him and very likely developed this print. In near fine condition with a small spot of toning to the upper right corner. The photograph measures 5 inches by 7 inches. Triple matted and framed. The entire piece measures 12.75 inches by 10.5 inches. A superb dated photograph from one of the most storied chapters of Roosevelt’s life.
Theodore Roosevelt was one of the great adventurers of his age, and his expeditions were the stuff of legend. In 1909, immediately after leaving the White House, he embarked on the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition, an eleven-month safari through British East Africa and the Sudan. He and his son Kermit collected more than 11,000 specimens for the Smithsonian Institution, and he chronicled the journey in his best-selling account African Game Trails, published in 1910. In 1913 and 1914 he undertook an even more perilous journey, joining the Brazilian explorer Cândido Rondon to chart the uncharted River of Doubt deep in the Amazon rainforest, a harrowing ordeal that nearly cost him his life and left him permanently weakened, and which he recounted in Through the Brazilian Wilderness. From his youthful years ranching and hunting in the Dakota Badlands to these late and daring travels, Roosevelt embodied the strenuous life he preached, and he remains as celebrated for his exploits in the wild as for his years in the White House.
