Rare First Edition Set of The Boone and Crockett Club Series; Edited by Theodore Roosevelt and George Bird Grinnell
First editions of three popular titles in the Boone and Crockett Club series, edited by Theodore Roosevelt and George Bird Grinnell. Octavo, three volumes bound in three quarter levant morocco over marbled boards by Adams bindery with gilt titles and decorations depicting a variety of big game animals to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, profusely illustrated with photographs and drawings including illustrations from "Forest and Stream" by Ernest Seton Thompson, tissue-guarded frontispiece to each volume including portrait of Theodore Roosevelt to American Big-Game Hunting. In near fine condition. From the library of Ferdinand Grant Loeb, with his armorial bookplate to each volume. Loeb, associated with the publishing operations of Forest and Stream, played a role in the production and dissemination of the Boone and Crockett Club volumes, working within the same publishing network that supported the Club’s early conservation efforts and helped bring its writings to a wider audience. A very nice set.
The Boone and Crockett Club Books series, published under the auspices of Forest and Stream and edited by Theodore Roosevelt, represents a significant corpus in the formation of American conservation literature at the turn of the twentieth century. Emerging from the intellectual and cultural milieu of elite sportsmen, the series brought together essays, expedition narratives, and scientific observations that sought to reconcile big game hunting with principles of wildlife preservation. Roosevelt’s editorial influence is evident in the consistent emphasis on “fair chase,” a doctrine that framed hunting as an ethical pursuit governed by restraint, legality, and respect for ecological balance. Through its integration of field experience and policy-oriented discourse, the series not only chronicled the rapidly changing landscapes of North America but also advanced an early conservationist agenda that contributed to the establishment of game laws, protected areas, and broader public awareness of environmental stewardship.
