Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986) was a French philosopher, writer, and feminist theorist whose work played a central role in twentieth-century existentialism and modern gender studies. Closely associated with Jean-Paul Sartre, she developed a distinctive philosophical voice that combined existential ethics with social analysis, most notably in 'The Second Sex' (1949), which examined the historical and cultural construction of womanhood. 'La Force des choses' (1963) is de Beauvoir’s autobiographical memoir chronicling her intellectual, political, and personal life from the end of the Second World War through the early 1960s.
