Dario Fo (1926–2016) was an Italian playwright, actor, and director renowned for his politically charged, satirical theater that drew on traditions of commedia dell’arte and popular performance. His works, including Accidental Death of an Anarchist (1970) and We Can’t Pay? We Won’t Pay! (1974), critique political corruption, social inequality, and institutional power through humor and farce. In recognition of his contributions to drama, Fo was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1997, cited for emulating medieval jesters in “scourging authority and upholding the dignity of the oppressed.” Throughout his career, he collaborated closely with his wife, the actress and writer Franca Rame, and remained an influential and controversial figure in European political theater.
