First Edition of War Without Heroes; Inscribed by David Douglas Duncan
First edition of this searing photographic record of American Marines in combat in Vietnam. Folio, original publisher's cloth with gilt titles, profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "6 November 1970 New York For Ralph - just pictures of friends, men like those all of us have known - Dave." Good in a good dust jacket with a loss to the cloth at the foot of the spine, a loss to the rear panel of the dust jacket, and a few short closed tears to the extremities. Photography, text, design, and production by David Douglas Duncan, printed by sheet-fed gravure in the Netherlands.
War Without Heroes (1970) is the final volume in David Douglas Duncan's trilogy of combat books, following This Is War! (1951), drawn from the Korean War, and I Protest! (1968). Photographed during three operations with United States Marine units in Vietnam, at Cua Viet, Con Thien, and Khe Sanh, it is an unflinching record of the ordinary fighting man under fire, and one in which Duncan stepped beyond the role of neutral observer to question how the war was being waged. David Douglas Duncan (1916 to 2018) was among the foremost combat photographers of the twentieth century, celebrated for his images of Marines in Korea and Vietnam and for his intimate studies of his friend Pablo Picasso in such books as The Private World of Pablo Picasso and Picasso's Picassos. The volume was printed by sheet-fed gravure by Enschede en Zonen in Haarlem and bound in the Netherlands.
