"To understand the stars would spoil their appearance": First Edition of Voss; Signed by Nobel Laureate Patrick White
First edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's fifth novel and what many consider to be his finest. Octavo, original blue boards. Signed by Patrick White on the title page. Near fine in a fine dust jacket without the usual toning to the spine. Dust jacket art by famed Australian artist Sydney Nolan. An exceptional example.
Voss is based on the life of the nineteenth-century Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt who disappeared whilst on an expedition into the Australian outback. Symbolism is heavily used in Voss, and is primarily religious. Voss is often compared to Christ. Voss visits the desert, leads men, and cures the sick. He also meets with the character Laura in garden which is comparable to the Garden of Eden.
