This Side of Paradise, published on March 26, 1920, was F. Scott Fitzgerald’s first novel and his first portrait of the Jazz Age and its Lost Generation, introducing the themes he would return to and perfect throughout his career, doomed romance across the boundaries of class and love lost amid the endless pursuit of social status. Fitzgerald was still at Princeton when he submitted the manuscript, then titled The Romantic Egoist, to Charles Scribner’s Sons, where the legendary editor Maxwell Perkins championed it. Issued in a first printing of 3,000 copies, the book was an immediate sensation that launched Fitzgerald’s career, and by the end of the following year it had been reprinted twelve times and had sold nearly 50,000 copies.
