First Edition of Christabel Aberconway's The Story of Mr Korah
First edition of this delightful children's story. Royal octavo, original half cloth, price clipped, illustrated by Rex Whistler. Whistler was a British artist, illustrator, and stage designer known for his elegant and whimsical style. The book includes three color illustrations with the sketches he had drawn when Lady Aberconway first told him 'The Story of Mr Korah.' Tragically, Whistler's artistic career was cut short when he was killed in action during World War II while serving as a tank commander. Very good in a very good dust jacket.
Christabel Aberconway (1890–1974) was a British writer and socialite known for her contributions to literature and her involvement in literary circles of the early 20th century. As the daughter of industrialist Henry McLaren, 2nd Baron Aberconway, she had access to prominent intellectual and artistic figures, which influenced her literary career. Aberconway wrote short stories and children's books, often characterized by whimsical narratives and a refined, engaging style. She collaborated with notable illustrators, including Rex Whistler, whose detailed and imaginative artwork complemented her storytelling. Though not a prolific writer, her works reflect the literary tastes of her era, blending charm and sophistication in a manner appreciated by both children and adults.
