Sir Robert Grierson of Lag (1655–1733) was a Scottish landowner and staunch royalist best known for his role in the persecution of Covenanters during the late seventeenth century, a period often referred to as the “Killing Times.” As a loyal supporter of the Stuart monarchy, he gained notoriety for his uncompromising enforcement of laws against Presbyterian dissenters, earning a reputation in both contemporary accounts and later folklore as a symbol of sectarian brutality. While some historians have contextualized his actions within the broader dynamics of Restoration politics and the consolidation of royal authority, popular memory has largely cast him as a villainous figure, immortalized in local legend and literature as the “Laird of Lag.”
