Finely bound edition of this classic work. Octavo, 2 volumes, bound in full calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, with nine full page engraved plates by Louis du Geurnier. In very good condition, with the ownership signature on title page of a W. A. Watson and occasional marginalia, rebacked. A very sharp example.
With nine full page engraved plates by Louis du Geurnier. The Faerie Queene was a new departure in the history of English poetry, being a combination of Italian romance, classical epic, and native English styles. Louis du Guernier, 1687 - 1716, was a French engraver. Du Guernier was soon recognized as a good designer, etcher and engraver, especially [of] small historical subjects for books or plays, of which he did a great many (Vertue, Note Books, 131).
