Leo Tolstoy, born into an aristocratic Russian family in 1828, stands as one of the towering figures of world literature. He is best known for his monumental novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, works widely regarded as the supreme achievements of realist fiction. Tolstoy first rose to prominence in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy—Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852–1856)—alongside his Sevastopol Sketches, drawn from his firsthand experiences in the Crimean War. Together, these early writings announced the arrival of a formidable literary voice, one that would go on to reshape the possibilities of the novel itself.
