Scottish novelist, poet, and historian Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) was a central figure in nineteenth-century literature and is widely credited with establishing the historical novel as a major literary form. After achieving early success as a poet with works such as The Lady of the Lake (1810), Scott turned to prose fiction, producing a series of influential novels including Waverley (1814) and Ivanhoe (1819). His writing is distinguished by its vivid reconstruction of historical settings, its blending of fictional and historical characters, and its exploration of social transformation, particularly in relation to Scottish and British identity. Drawing on his antiquarian interests and narrative skill, Scott helped popularize historical fiction across Europe, exerting a lasting influence on both literature and the cultural imagination.
