Charles Churchill (1732–1764) was an influential English satirist of the eighteenth century whose work reflected the political and cultural tensions of his time. Closely associated with radical Whig politics, Churchill used verse as a vehicle for sharp social and political critique, often targeting figures within the literary and theatrical worlds. His most notable poems, including The Rosciad (1761) and The Prophecy of Famine (1763), demonstrated his command of heroic couplets and his ability to combine wit with invective. Unlike the more restrained neoclassical satirists who preceded him, Churchill’s style was marked by its directness, personal attacks, and energetic tone, which contributed to both his popularity and controversy. Though his career was brief, his work occupied an important place in the development of eighteenth-century satire, bridging the gap between Augustan formalism and a more openly partisan mode of poetic expression.
