Ted Williams: A Biography of The Kid by the Boston sportswriter Arthur Sampson was among the earliest biographies of Ted Williams, the Red Sox slugger widely regarded as the greatest pure hitter in the history of baseball. Published in 1950 as part of A. S. Barnes’s Most Valuable Player Series, it followed Williams’s 1949 American League Most Valuable Player award and chronicled the career of “The Kid” to that point, including his .406 season of 1941, the last time any major leaguer has batted over .400 across a full season. A nineteen-time All-Star, two-time Most Valuable Player, and two-time Triple Crown winner whose career was twice interrupted by military service as a Marine aviator, Williams was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
