T. H. White was an English novelist, social historian, and satirist best known for his adaptation of Sir Thomas Malory’s fifteenth-century Morte Darthur into the quartet of novels collectively titled The Once and Future King. Verses, the final book published during his lifetime, comprises thirty-six poems and reflects a more personal and occasional mode of writing, including pieces addressed to figures such as Julie Andrews and Richard Burton. The volume was dedicated to Michael Howard, who played an important role in the preservation and presentation of White’s legacy. Howard was responsible for the photographic portrait of White reproduced on the cover of Sylvia Townsend Warner’s bibliography, as well as several additional images included in that work. In her acknowledgements, Warner notes Howard’s encouragement in undertaking the project, his provision of documentary material, his preparation of the illustrations, and his granting her access to the intimate diaries left to his guardianship, underscoring his custodial role in shaping the archival and visual record of White’s life and work.
