Francesco Petrarca (1304–1374), commonly known as Petrarch, was an Italian scholar, poet, and humanist whose works helped lay the intellectual foundation for the Renaissance. Writing in both Latin and the vernacular, he is best known for his Canzoniere (“Songbook”), a collection of lyric poems devoted to his idealized love for Laura, which perfected the sonnet form and profoundly influenced European poetry for centuries. Beyond his literary achievements, Petrarch’s rediscovery and promotion of classical texts marked a turning point in the revival of humanist learning, emphasizing the moral and aesthetic value of antiquity.
