"Look on every exit as being an entrance somewhere else": Rare First Edition of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead; Signed By Academy Award-Winning Actor Gary Oldman
First paperback edition (issued simultaneously in hardback) of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original wrappers. Boldly signed by Academy Award-winning actor Gary Oldman on the front free endpaper. Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1990) is the sole directorial effort of Sir Tom Stoppard, who adapted his own celebrated 1966 absurdist play for the screen, reasoning, as he put it, that he would be the only person who could treat the play with the necessary disrespect. At the center of the film is a pairing of two of the most electrifying screen actors of their generation: Gary Oldman — who would later win the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour (2018) — plays Rosencrantz with a quality of baffled, good-natured bewilderment perfectly suited to Stoppard's tragicomic design, opposite Tim Roth's more anxiously philosophical Guildenstern, with Richard Dreyfuss rounding out the principal cast as the grandiloquent Player. Oldman received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead for his performance. The film won the Golden Lion at the 47th Venice International Film Festival — the highest prize in one of the world's most prestigious film competitions. In very good condition.
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead is the fabulously inventive tale of Hamlet as told from the worms-eye view of the bewildered Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters in Shakespeares play. In Tom Stoppards best-known work, this Shakespearean Laurel and Hardy finally get a chance to take the lead role, but do so in a world where echoes of Waiting for Godot resound, where reality and illusion intermix, and where fate leads our two heroes to a tragic but inevitable end. "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead [is] verbally dazzlingthe most exciting, witty intellectual treat imaginable." (Edith Oliver, The New Yorker).
