The Photo Poche Edition of Robert Capa; Inscribed by Cornell Capa to Celebrated Portrait Photographer Yousuf Karsh
The Photo Poche edition, early printing of the photographs of Robert Capa, the cover bearing Capa’s iconic image of a falling Republican soldier from the Spanish Civil War. Small octavo, written in French, original photographic wrappers. Association copy, inscribed by the photographer’s younger brother, Cornell Capa, on the half-title page to the celebrated portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh and his wife Estrellita, “Yousuf & Estrellita - You will love this... Fondly, Cornell.” Cornell Capa (1918-2008) was himself an eminent photographer and a member of Magnum Photos, the younger brother of the war photographer Robert Capa and the founder of the International Center of Photography in New York, which he established in 1974 to preserve the legacy of his late brother and other photographers of concerned photography. Karsh in turn photographed Cornell Capa, making his portrait in 1981 during Capa’s tenure at the International Center of Photography and again in 1990 for his American Legends series. The recipient, Yousuf Karsh, is recognized as one of the leading photographers of the twentieth century. Arriving in Canada in 1924 as an Armenian refugee, Karsh eventually settled in Ottawa. Over six decades, he mastered the art of portraiture and created a unique chronicle of his time through images of celebrated legends. Some of his most notable subjects include Winston Churchill, Audrey Hepburn, Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Ernest Hemingway, among others. A celebrity in his own right, he was an elegant and charming public figure, captivating audiences with compelling stories told in images and words. Karsh sought to capture, as he put it, the “elusive moment of truth,” revealing the essential nature of his subjects as reflected in their eyes, hands, and attitudes. From the collection of Yousuf Karsh with his estate label to the verso of the front wrapper. Held by the Estate of Yousuf & Estrellita Karsh; after Yousuf’s death in 2002 passing to Estrellita Karsh; after Estrellita’s death in March 2025 passing to Katherine Getchell. In very good condition. Introduction by Jean Lacouture.
This volume in the celebrated Photo Poche series, published by the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris, gathers the photographs of Robert Capa (1913-1954), one of the greatest war photographers of the twentieth century. Born Endre Friedmann in Budapest, Capa covered five wars, from the Spanish Civil War, where he made his famous image of a falling Republican soldier, to the Second World War, including the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach, and the First Indochina War, where he was killed by a landmine in 1954. A co-founder of the Magnum Photos cooperative in 1947, Capa defined the ideal of the engaged photojournalist, famously advising that if your pictures are not good enough, you are not close enough. The volume carries an introduction by the French historian and biographer Jean Lacouture.
