Road to Perdition (2002), directed by Sam Mendes, is a crime drama set in the American Midwest during the Great Depression. The film follows Michael Sullivan, a hitman for an Irish mob family, as he seeks revenge and protection for his son after a betrayal leads to the murder of his wife and younger child. Visually influenced by film noir, the cinematography by Conrad L. Hall uses shadow, rain, and symmetrical composition to create a somber and emotionally distant atmosphere. Rather than glorifying organized crime, the film presents it as cold, institutional, and impersonal, reflecting the social and economic instability of the 1930s. Through its focus on a father-son relationship and the consequences of inherited violence, Road to Perdition offers a restrained and elegiac reinterpretation of the gangster genre.
