Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca; Signed by the 1940 Film's Academy Award-Winning Director Alfred Hitchcock with a Self-Portrait and Film Star Joan Fontaine
Finely bound example of Du Maurier's most popular novel, the basis for Alfred Hitchcock’s Academy Award-winning 1940 film, signed by Alfred Hitchcock and the film's heroine Joan Fontaine. Octavo, bound in full polished calf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, double ruling stamped in blind to the front and rear panels. Association copy, signed opposite the title page by Alfred Hitchcock opposite the title page, "Alfred Hitchcock." Hitchcock has added an original drawing of his instantly recognizable self-portrait in profile. Additionally signed by the film's heroine Joan Fontaine beneath Hitchcock's signature. In very good condition with toning to the spine and rubbing to the spine extremities. With two autograph letters of provenance laid in, one dated 1941. Housed in a custom slipcase. Exceptionally rare and desirable.
“‘Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.’ The opening line of perhaps the greatest romantic suspense novel ever written has become as familiar to readers as ‘Call me Ishmael’ from Moby-Dick” (Penzler, Crown Crime Companion 9). Du Maurier’s most popular novel, and one that paved the way for a renaissance of romantic mystery in mid-20th century publishing, Rebecca “subtly subverts the classic rags-to-riches or Cinderella theme to provide an eerie… almost Gothic narrative” (Parker & Kermode, 211). The novel proved to critics that “Du Maurier is in a class by herself” (New York Times). The novel was adapted into the 1940 American romantic psychological thriller film of the same name directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It was Hitchcock's first American project and received eleven nominations at the 13th Academy Awards, more than any other film that year. It won two awards: Best Picture and Best Cinematography, becoming the only film directed by Hitchcock to win the former award.
