Isaac Asimov (1920–1992) was an American biochemist and one of the most influential science fiction writers of the twentieth century, best known for the Foundation series (psychohistory and the fall of a galactic empire) and the Robot stories, which introduced the Three Laws of Robotics and helped define modern AI ethics in popular culture. His work received major honors, including a Hugo Award for Foundation’s Edge and both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for The Gods Themselves, as well as the SFWA’s Grand Master award recognizing his lifetime achievement. Asimov’s fiction has also had an extensive afterlife in screen culture, most notably through Apple TV+’s ongoing adaptation of Foundation, which draws on the core ideas and world-building of his novels while reimagining plot and character across seasons.
