Katharine Lee Bates (1859–1929) was an American poet, professor, and writer best known for composing the lyrics to America the Beautiful. A professor of English at Wellesley College, she was also a prolific author of poetry, travel writings, and children's literature. Bates was an advocate for social reform, including women’s rights and education, and her works often reflected her progressive ideals. In very good condition, bookplate to the front free endpapers.
