English judge and political writer Sir Robert Atkyns was appointed a Knight of the Bath in 1661 and later served with distinction as a judge of the Court of Common Pleas from 1689. He is best remembered for Parliamentary and Political Tracts, a collection of essays and speeches confronting the constitutional and parliamentary controversies of late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century England. Composed in the turbulent aftermath of the English Civil Wars, the tracts defend the authority of Parliament, the rule of law, and the liberties of the subject, reflecting the volatile political climate of the Restoration and early Hanoverian era. Together, they provide a vivid record of contemporary debate and stand as a lasting contribution to early modern British political thought.
