First limited edition of John Masefield’s rousing South American adventure novel, its cryptic title an acronym for “One Damn Thing After Another.” Octavo, original vellum-backed blue boards, in the plain printed dust jacket of the deluxe issue. One of only 275 numbered copies, this is number 175. Boldly signed by the author on the limitations page. Laid in, in its original envelope, is the reproduction of the pictorial dust jacket of the ordinary edition, a colour facsimile of the map of Santa Barbara printed on japon vellum and signed by the artist. In very good condition with toning to the endpapers and losses to the spine of the dust jacket. A handsome signed limited edition of one of Masefield’s most entertaining novels.
John Masefield (1878-1967), Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until his death, was a prolific poet, novelist, and man of letters, best remembered for his sea poems such as Sea Fever and Cargoes. ODTAA, published in 1926, is a fast-paced adventure novel set in the imaginary South American republic of Santa Barbara, a companion to his earlier Sard Harker, following a young Englishman caught up in a revolution and a desperate attempt to save a condemned woman. Its striking title is an acronym for the rueful phrase One Damn Thing After Another, and the charming pictorial map of Santa Barbara that adorned the book is among the most delightful features of the edition.
