Nothing (1950) is one of the late novels of Henry Green, the pen name of the English writer Henry Vincent Yorke (1905-1973), a Birmingham industrialist by day and, in the judgment of many critics, one of the most original English novelists of the twentieth century. Told almost entirely in dialogue, it is a sparkling comedy of manners in which two middle-aged former lovers scheme against the romance blossoming between their grown children amid the faded gentility of postwar London. W.H. Auden considered Green the finest English novelist of his generation, and his spare and idiosyncratic books, among them Living, Party Going, and Loving, have kept a devoted following ever since. “Henry Green is an accomplished virtuoso, and he makes his upper-middle-class Londoners perform like figures in some highly stylized ritual dance of a dying culture.
