First Edition of My Kenya Days; Signed by Wilfred Thesiger
First edition of Wilfred Thesiger's memoir, the famous explorer's account of living among the Northern tribes of Kenya. Octavo, original publisher's cloth, illustrated with black and white photographs. Boldly signed by Wilfred Thesiger on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket.
Wilfred Thesiger (1910–2003) was a British explorer, travel writer, and ethnographic observer known for his accounts of remote regions in the Middle East and Africa. Educated at Eton and Oxford, Thesiger gained prominence for his expeditions across the Arabian Peninsula’s Rub’ al Khali (“Empty Quarter”), later documented in Arabian Sands (1959), as well as his extensive travels in Ethiopia, Sudan, and Kenya. His writings combine detailed geographic description with reflections on traditional societies, often expressing skepticism toward modernization and a preference for austere, nomadic ways of life. 'My Kenya Days' is a memoir recounting the author’s experiences in Kenya during the mid-twentieth century, particularly his travels and life among pastoral communities such as the Samburu and Turkana. Reflecting Thesiger’s characteristic interest in remote landscapes and traditional societies, the book combines personal narrative with ethnographic observation, documenting modes of life he believed were threatened by modernization and colonial transformation.
